What Light Metering does is, well you have to focus on light. And what ever the camera focuses on the in basically your center of light. Everything else either gets darker or a lot lighter.
I the top photo the screen is well light and you can some what see the words on the screen and everything else is dark. As for the bottom photo Everything is light up and screen in now insanely bright. And Notice the in the second photo everything looks a bit pixilated that's because the camera is trying to fill the picture with missing light.
Spot Metering can help you when you are in dark situation or if you are out side with flipping intense shadows just make sure you check your ISO before going outside.
